Program
Overview
As one of the first private colleges in the USA to provide instruction in Engineering, Norwich's 187 years of academic heritage and decades of servicing adult distance learners provide a solid foundation for an online graduate Engineering program.
The core curriculum of the MCE program consists of 36 credits of
coursework, split in six, 6-credit seminars. Each seminar lasts about
eleven weeks. The coursework is followed by a one-week residency
and graduation at Norwich located in the beautiful Green Mountains
of Vermont.
E-learning. The perfect fit.
It may surprise you, but our online virtual classrooms have better
participation and academic discourse than most traditional classrooms.
Students interact with their instructors and classmates on a regular
basis.
The classroom is virtual. Your Master’s
degree is real.
The MCE program is designed for individuals who work on a full-time
basis and who appreciate the advantages of applying what they learn
in the classroom to their profession. The convenience and flexibility
of online learning is well established. Study at home, at work,
or even at a nearby wireless café.
Knowledge and Insight. On demand.
The Norwich University online library has one of the most comprehensive
databases available in education today. This guarantees accessibility
to research information.
Special Features of the Program
Many within the engineering profession acknowledge that today's
undergraduate engineering education has its shortcomings. For a
variety of reasons, students obtaining bachelor's degrees today
are lacking in several key areas (technical and non-technical).
Recently, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) assembled
a team of industry and academic professionals who were charged with
creating a long term strategic plan that addresses these shortcomings.Their
comprehensive report provided recommendations for improving civil
engineering education, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels,
in the 21st century.
During the development of the MCE program, NU utilized the findings
of the ASCE report. As a result, the program provides a comprehensive
examination of the technical side of engineering. The MCE program
also addresses the administrative issues faced by today's engineers.
Topics covered, therefore, range from how to perform a non-linear
dynamic frame analysis to how to run a consulting office. We have
combined the best of both worlds — a graduate degree in civil engineering
and an MBA.
Design Portfolio
Students must compile a portfolio that will contain copies of all
of their design projects from the six seminars. It enables the student,
faculty, and Program Director to see at a glance the extensive growth
the student has experienced through this rigorous program. The portfolio
is presented to the faculty and Program Director during the residency
week as the final requirement for your degree.
